My biggest fear is…

I am scared of blood.

Yes. Yes, I know I’m a nursing student.

However, I have been told by nurses and teachers that this is a fear I will get over quickly.
How quickly, though?
Like the first time I hit the deck after some guy’s wound starts bleeding on my white scrubs?

I will say though, that I’ve observed a woman having a Cesarean section, and other than the fact that the mask I had to wear messed up my hair and lipstick, I was fine.

This semester, my hospital rotation is on the surgical ward, dealing with patients post-operatively.
This means changing dressings.
Seeing blood.
Changing dressings.
Seeing blood.

During my theory classes, the teacher shows up slides like this…

image from here

…actually, not like that.
Bigger.
Bloodier.
But I can’t actually handle looking at them even on Google Images, so this is the picture I chose.
And I’m not much better at looking at them during class.
During one slide, I wondered if anyone would notice me lay my head on the desk.

Anyway, last class, we were taught about surgical protocol, and what occurs during surgery.
The teacher was really pushing the idea of any or all of us gearing up for a surgical practicum.
“Don’t listen to people who say that surgery is boring; that all you do is pass the surgeon his instruments. It’s not just about that,” the teacher says.

And of course, despite many warnings that it’s important not to “zone-out” during these theory classes, the mere mention of the word surgeon has me fantasizing about this guy…

…and I’m suddenly picturing myself standing across an OR table handing him instruments, staring deeply into these eyes…

image from here

…and doing this with him…

What? That could totally be me kissing opposite Patrick Dempsey!

So, after much thought and consideration, I’ve decided to become a surgical nurse.

As long as I don’t have to deal with surgeries in which the patients are positioned like this…

image from here

…I think I’m good.

And anyway, I am going to stick this rotation out because I can totally rock these white scrubs.

during my c-section, when they cut me open, a stream of blood shot across the room & hit one of the nurses right in the back like a squirt gun. exciting, huh?

You do rock that outfit. Now show one of you in the nurse's dress.

  9. Blood doesn't bother me unless it's coming from one of my kids' heads or some other vital area.

Hopper, though? Yeah. She can't handle it. And with her developmental delays it can prove to be a bit comical…Several years ago, she woke us up on a Saturday morning with a bloody nose. And bless her little heart, with a very stuffed nose from crying and from the drainage, she asked, “Bandaid??”

You rock the shit out of those white scrubs!

The only time I've been grossed out was when someone had pubic lice on their eyelashes. The person had severe itching on the eyelids, so I was looking through the microscope picking off what I thought was crust and it MOVED! OMG, it fucking MOVED!

You do rock those scrubs. And now I'll have sweet dreams about McDreamy…but I'm thinking that's McSteamy and Little Grey in that photo. He looks a little scruffy to be McDreamy, no? Good luck with the blood and guts and…blood. :)

It's needles I hate even after having chemo, the nurses said it would cure my phobia but hell no, 20 years on, it's as bad as ever. When my son, who is often in hospital has to get a cannula put in, I can't look but I can already feel the blood running out of my face at the thought!!! lol

I am not fond of blood and if it is my own, well, thank God there's Xanax. Seeing my kids blood also freaks me out.

Saturday when my daughter had her baby, I had to leave the room when the stitching was going on. This was after my daughter said, “Mom! Look! My placenta, isn't that COOL?” Yeah. Very. Let me out of here to talk to your dad. Seeing all that post-delivery blood freaked me out. It was my BABY! Bleeding.

The granddaughter is so totally worth it though!

It's a good thing my sister is the doctor. I worked on computers, she works on people. I got dirty, she gets bloody. I think that's fair. BTW I thought the picture of the stitched wound was a bug of some sort until I looked longer and closer. See, you really wouldn't want me working on your body.

You will get over it once you learn to disconnect yourself from the blood. I used to hate any bodily fluids. Now I am a surgical tech soon to be nursing student. I scrub c-sections. Even my own parents are shocked. You will be fine. But I still can't handle poop….I just can't and I refuse.

I am not that good with blood, but worse then that for me is vomit.

I was always afraid of needles, but since my son was diagnosed with diabetes I had to embraced it. Giving your child needles numerous times a day will do that to a person I guess.

….and of course there is Dr. McDreamy…yummy

  39. Katie

The suture pic you posted is what oogs me out. I can barely look at my own injuries. Blood I'm fine with, it's the wound, the incision and those damn stitches that make me woozy. Staples? I had to hold my arm up to block the view in the mirror as I took my first shower after c-section. I am not RN material at all. I can talk gross body stuff over lunch with my nurse coworkers, but please don't make me look at any of it.

Don't worry your fear of blood will pass. Lots of people in nursing school passed out. I was one of them- but it wasn't cuz I was scared of blood it was cuz I didn't eat breakfast- I know some nurse I am, hey- well at least that's what I told people but maybe it was kind of the blood too.
    Anyways, you'll be fine.

Now you have me considering being a surgical nurse as well…

    January 10, 2011 | 6:51 pm

Well, of COURSE you look freaking adorable in your scrubs. Good luck getting over your fear of blood. I'm sure you will become desensitized sooner than later.

I cannot stand the sight of blood, or the thought of needles – seriously. I have been known to faint at the mere sight of either.

    *shudder*

If that ever happens again, hopefully YOU will be my nurse wielding the smelling salts!

I thought of going into nursing once but decided not to since I thought I'd most likely get fired for passing out on the job every time I had to stick a needle into someone's flesh.

And WTF is that naked dude doing on that thing?

  52. Anne

My husband has 4 stitches in his finger right now, and every time I think of them my stomach goes all whirly-nasty. So not nurse material over here! I think you're rockin' those shoes, as well!

  54. life in the mom lane
    January 10, 2011 | 7:52 pm

Not a huge fan of blood especially in horror movies, but in real life in an emergency I have never freaked out- I usually have kind of disassociated myself and did what I had to. There are areas of nursing where there is not an excess of blood- but poop, etc I don't think I would like dealing with that.

A nurse who's squeamish about blood. Wow. I have this butt puckering issue when I see cuts and wounds. I don't feel faint or need to throw up, I just get all puckery in my bunghole. I don't know what it's all about. I'm fascinated by k-ster's wound from his surgery but every so often I look and I pucker. It really only happens if I think it hurts, I've decided. So if he tells me it feels fine, I can look at it until the cows come home. BUt if he was screaming and crying, I might take a moment.

Ok…next I refuse to sound like a broken record by saying that you are definitely rockin' the white scrubs (and yes you so are) but I'm gonna take a different route and say that I think you should be very very careful about your unmentionable colors underneath. If you choose, say, BLACK, there is no room for imagination and all your business will be displayed…especially if you bend over!
